Selling your Car to Wreckers

by Aubree Richardson

Car wreckers and junkyards offer a much needed alternative for disposal of used cars. In most countries, car disposal in landfills and in your backyard can actually attract fines or prosecution. In Australia, Toyota wreckers form part of a large network of car wreckers who both re-use and recycle most of these car parts. If you have an old Toyota, locating a Toyota wreckers junkyard shop would be the first step to disposing off the old car.

Negotiating the deal

Most car wreckers negotiate the price of your old car over the phone. Be sure to give them the exact make and model of the car plus other details that would make your Toyota car seem attractive and full of useful parts, but not a lie. Once you have negotiated a deal, it may not hurt to try other Toyota wreckers near you and compare the deals to see your best offer.

Delivering the car

It would be prudent to deliver the car to the junkyard yourself. Find any means possible to get your old car to the Toyota wreckers site. This is because having the wreckers pick up the car from your premises reduces the amount they pay you for the car. After negotiating a price, they may likely charge you a high pickup and delivery fee.  Ensure you have carried all your documentation pertaining to the car. Missing a few documents can fix you in a tight corner and have you accept a bad deal.

Ensure you have carried every possible spare part from that car to the Toyota wreckers site. Once there, you can actually re-open negotiations on the price of the car based on the parts present.

Get more than money

When visiting Toyota wreckers junkyards to sell your car, you can actually bargain to receive other services from the operators. Several people have bargained for a quick part here or a quick fix there as part of the overall payment given to them. Most of these wreckers are connected to local garages and a little squeeze from you may just earn you a cheap fix from a good garage.

Ensure title has been transferred

Most people forget this step. After about two weeks, call your local department that deals with vehicle registration and ensure that the vehicle is no-longer listed as yours. This is a crucial step. The junkyard must commence title transfer immediately on purchasing the car. Should the car be involved in any further activity after your sale, you may be held liable if the title had not been transferred!
