Bangs and Bumps: 3 Reasons Your Car Might Be Misfiring

by Aubree Richardson

If your car engine is frequently making unexplained and unexpected banging noises and giving you a bumpy or jerky ride, it is likely that it is misfiring. Your car misfires when some part of the fuel combustion process is incomplete. Below is a guide to common causes of engine misfiring, which will help you when you take your car to be serviced.

Faulty Fuel Injection System

As the name suggests, a fuel injection system injects fuel into the cylinders of the engine. If your fuel injection system isn't properly serviced, it may become dirty or blocked. This is often caused by debris created by the flow of fuel through the system, which results in an incomplete flow of fuel into the engine. This leads to an incorrect fuel and air mix and incomplete combustion, resulting in loud bangs and a very bumpy ride. To avoid this problem, you should have your fuel injection system periodically inspected and serviced.

Faulty Engine Cylinder

One of the leading causes of engine misfires is a faulty cylinder. The cylinders of the engine are the part where the fuel and air mix and are ignited. It is the power created by this ignition that creates the mechanical force needed to turn the wheels of the vehicle. If the engine cylinder becomes worn, it can cause an incomplete combustion of the fuel and air mixture. This causes the car to misfire.

Faulty Spark Plugs

The spark plugs sit on top of the cylinder. The spark plugs ignite the air and fuel mix when it is compressed within the cylinder. With use, spark plugs wear out as the constant sparking causes the metal components of the plug to burn out. As the metal contacts become smaller, a larger voltage is needed to generate a spark of electricity which can bridge the gap between them. When the battery is unable to produce adequate voltage, the engine will misfire, and the fuel and air mix will not be burnt. If you are experiencing problems with a backfiring engine, you should inspect your spark plugs for any signs of wear or damage and replace them if necessary.

Engine misfires don't just lead to a noisy and uncomfortable ride, they also drastically reduce the efficiency of your engine, resulting is reduced engine power, increased fuel consumption and increased emissions. If you are experiencing problems with a backfiring engine, contact a car service centre, such as Blue Ribbon Motors, today.
