How knowing about refrigerated vans can calm your mind about having groceries delivered to you

by Aubree Richardson

When it comes to groceries, different types of delivery services have become increasingly popular over the past couple of years. Buying food in the comfort of your own home has many advantages. However, some might worry about receiving food that has been spoiled or contains harmful bacteria. To calm your mind, it might be good for you to know how many grocery stores choose to deliver their food in order to avoid loss of quality and freshness.

The importance of properly refrigerated food

Food like meat products, fish and dairy products can't be kept in an unrefrigerated habitat for too long. When you buy fresh fish from a store, it's advised not to keep it in your fridge for more than two days before eating it. This already short amount of time reduces for every hour fresh fish is kept in an unrefrigerated environment. The time it takes to deliver the fish can, because of that, create quite a change to the expiration date. Eating fresh food spoiled by being improperly refrigerated can make you ill and should by all means be avoided. That's why, as a rule, grocery stores that deliver food to your home use refrigerated vans to keep the groceries as fresh as possible.

How do refrigerated vans work?

The refrigerated vans have the advantage of keeping the same temperature as a common refrigerator. It's therefore no more harmful for your food to be temporarily stored in a refrigerated van than it would be to store it in your own refrigerator. They even use a similar condenser system as common, household refrigerators. They are basically fridges on wheels. If you've purchased frozen food, there are even vans that can transport food in degrees down to -20 degrees. How low temperature they can keep is dependent on how well insulated they are. For a refrigerated van that can keep food refrigerated, but not frozen, the layer of insulation is usually 50 mm thick; for freezer vans the thickness of the insulation can go up to 100 mm.

How does your local store transport groceries

To find out if your local grocery store uses refrigerated vans, you can ask someone in the store or find all details about delivery on their website.  In the unlikely even they do not use this form of transportation for your groceries, refrain from using their delivery service to purchase refrigerated goods, as this can be directly hazardous to you and your family's health.
