Features to Consider When Buying an Aluminum Trailer Ramp for Your Truck

by Aubree Richardson

If you own an ATV, wheelchair, riding lawnmower, or any other such equipment that you load and unload into the back of your truck, you want to invest in a high-quality aluminum trailer ramp. Trying to use sheets of plywood, wooden planks, or any other makeshift ramp can easily cause you to topple during loading or unloading and can also cause damage to the tyres of your equipment. You may also see that your ATV or other item scrapes the ground during loading, and this too can cause damage. When you're ready to invest in an aluminum ramp, note a few features to consider to ensure you choose the right one.

1. Ski guides

If you're loading or unloading a snowmobile, you want a ramp with what are called ski guides. This is a special feature in the middle of the ramp that protects the skis of the snowmobile. If you don't use a ramp with a ski guide, you may see that the skis get scratched or bent even if you try to tow the snowmobile into the back of your truck with a winch.

2. Arches

For equipment that sits low to the ground such as a riding lawnmower, choose a ramp that is arched in the middle. This type of ramp will gently lift the equipment off the ground and allow for more clearance, so that the body of the piece you're loading or unloading doesn't scrape.

3. Full width

If you're loading something very heavy such as an ATV or riding lawnmower, you want a ramp that is the full width of your truck. This disperses the weight of the equipment across the body of the truck so that you're not putting too much pressure on the middle of the axle and other parts under the truck's body. If you're not sure if you need a full width ramp, err on the side of caution and choose one; remember that gasoline in your ATV or lawnmower, a full bag of grass clippings, and the like can add to the weight of the equipment itself. It's always better to be safe about getting a ramp that will manage that weight and protect your truck.

4. High traction solid surface

Most aluminum ramps will have perforations on the surface, but some will have a solid surface with added traction. These are meant for equipment with small wheels that don't offer much traction themselves, such as wheelchairs and indoor scooters. Choose a high traction solid surface ramp for anything with smaller, smoother wheels.
