Answers to Commonly Asked Questions about Vehicle Registration Inspections in Australia

by Aubree Richardson

In Australia, you often need to have your vehicle inspected before you can get a new registration. This inspection, sometimes called a safety check or vehicle registration inspection, needs to comply with certain laws and regulations and cannot be done by just anyone, although they're also not needed on every vehicle on the road. Note a few answers to commonly asked questions about these inspections in Australia so you know what to expect.

1. Are all vehicles required to get an inspection?

Generally speaking, if a vehicle is less than five years old, it doesn't need a safety check for a new registration. If the check is necessary for your vehicle, it will be noted on your registration certificate so you know to get it done before you apply for your new paperwork. If you have a relatively new vehicle and there is no notice that you need a safety check, you can always call a local registration office and confirm what is required of you, but generally your newer vehicle will be exempt from this requirement.

Vehicles being brought to Australia from another country usually need to have this safety check performed, no matter their age. Note this requirement if you decide to transfer your ownership paperwork, such as when moving permanently to the country.

2. What if the vehicle fails the safety check?

You are not left without appropriate information if your vehicle fails the safety check; instead, you are given a report about your vehicle and what needs to be done next. This is called a Repairs Needed report. Typically you have fourteen days to have these repairs performed.

Once the repairs are performed, you still need to have another safety check done. This is to ensure they've been done properly and that your vehicle passes inspection properly. Your Repairs Needed report is then cleared automatically and your safety check is complete.

3. Can anyone perform this check?

The station or professional you use to perform this check must be authorized under what is called the Roads and Maritime Department. Note that different stations may have different authorizations for different vehicles, so if you have a heavy-duty truck and not a family sedan, you need to ensure that the station or professional you use has that authorization in particular. A station that is authorized will have a type of sticker or plaque displayed that shows they're licensed to perform these safety checks, so be sure to look for those when you arrive for your check.
