Tips for Spray Painting a Car

by Aubree Richardson

If you are completing a car restoration project or are simply looking for a way to cover up substantial rust, consider spray painting your car. Spray painting a car will give it a new style and look that is appealing. If you want your spray paint job to look professional and like it was air brushed, there are a few spray painting tips for your car that you need to follow to allow for the best results possible.

Removing

It is always a good idea to make sure that you are removing or taping specific parts of your car to ensure that you give the most accurate spray painting job possible. This is especially recommended if you do not have a lot of past experience with spray painting tools. It might take longer for you to complete the spray painting job if you have to remove the bumper or just the door that you wish to paint, but the end result will be much more accurate. Just remember that if you do use tape, choose one that is painter's grade to ensure that the finish on the car is not damaged by exposure to the tape.

Prepping

It is also key for you to prep the entire surface of the vehicle that you are spray painting. You will need to use sandpaper in order to even out any scratches or marks that are visible on the surface of the car. Some imperfections will require more sanding than others. If you do not take the time to prep the surface of the vehicle, the imperfections will still be visible even after you spray paint over them.

Applying

When you are spray painting a vehicle of any type or size, you will need to apply multiple coats. You should not try to save time by applying one heavy coat of paint because this will not look best. It is most effective to apply each coat lightly. The paint will build up too quickly and will begin to run if you apply each coat heavily. This means that you can get more professional-looking results by making sure that you apply only light coats of spray paint. You also need to be sure that each coat that you apply has sufficient time to dry before you apply an additional coat of spray paint to the car.

If you have any further questions about car spray painting, such as which type of paint to use, speak with a professional in your area.
